Van Weezer is Weezer’s 14th studio album, and is set to release on May 15th, 2020. “Last album we didn’t have any guitars, this one is just all guitars. A hundred guitars,” says Cuomo. The album very obviously takes its name from the popular hard rock and metal band Van Halen.

The album and the lead single, The End of The Game, were announced along with the Hella Mega Tour, a joint tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy Weezer have confirmed that their new single ‘Hero’ will be coming out this week – check out the post below. The Los Angeles band, who are due to release their new album ‘Van Weezer’ this month, took to Twitter yesterday (May 4) to reveal that the song would be out tomorrow (May 6). It will follow on from their previous track ‘The End Of The Game’.

Weezer is very important to me. From the ’90s to today, the Rivers Cuomo-fronted rock band known for hits like “Undone (The Sweater Song)” and “Hash Pipe” have formed the nerdy, crunchy, catchy tunes of my life. And yes, some purists may say that The Blue Album and Pinkerton are the only ones worth listening to. But I find enjoyable stuff on nearly every album they’ve released since then (and, don’t tell anyone, but Maladroit is secretly my favorite). I’ve been stoked about their upcoming record Van Weezer since it was first announced alongside the best single they’ve put out in years, “The End of the Game.” And now, “The End of the Game” has a bonafide video game to go along with it.

“The End of the Game Game” has deliciously retro 16-bit styles, and lets you play as a member of the band — lead guitarist/singer Cuomo, rhythm guitarist Brian Bell, bassist Scott Shriner, or my personal pick, drummer Patrick Wilson. Ostensibly, it’s a run-and-gun Contra-styled side-scroller — except the very first steps you take take you to, well, the end of the game. A final boss level, against the very cute alien at the center of the “End of the Game” music video. I felt a little bad about blasting this guy away, but dear reader: I did. And I enjoyed every piece of Weezer nostalgia along the way, from the screenshots of the “Keep Fishin’” Muppets music video to the can of pork and beans I grabbed for an extra life. Just one issue I had — at the very end, after I beat the boss, it offered me a treasure to nab. But when I tried to walk over to it, jump to it, or even shoot it — the game killed the heck out of me. Is this intentional? Or is there some secret way to win I’m missing? Only one way to find out, gamers.

“[On the] last album we didn’t have any guitars, this one is just all guitars. A hundred guitars,” he explained. “This is all from playing shows, and we just noticed over the last few years there’d be these moments during the show where I’d accidentally bust out a few harmonics or a whammy bar dive or a little tapping just because I can’t control myself.

Cuomo continued, “The inspiration came from our live shows, where, in the middle of ‘Beverly Hills,’ unlike on the album, everything stops and I just break out with this crazy guitar solo. We noticed that, recently, the crowd just goes crazy when I do that. So it feels like maybe the audience is ready for some shredding again.”

This year, Weezer have released two self-titled LPs: January’s covers collection, known as the Teal Album, and March’s Black Album. Beginning in June 2020, the band heads out on the “Hella Mega Tour” with Green Day and Fall Out Boy.

LOL remember when we thought Weezer were heading out with Green Day and Fall Out Boy on the Hella Mega Tour this year? Good times. Back when they announced that jaunt, each band shared a new single. Weezer’s offering, “The End Of The Game,” was the opening track from their upcoming album Van Weezer, which Rivers Cuomo has described as “back to big guitars. ‘Blue Album’-ish, but a little more riffy.” He says it’s inspired by the loud crowd reactions when he breaks into a guitar solo during “Beverly Hills.”

Weezer have a new song from Van Weezer out today. In a press release it’s billed as their first new song since “The End Of The Game,” but real heads know in

the interim they smashed their treatment of ’80s-style power ballad “Lost In The Woods” from the Frozen II soundtrack, as any band with their ’80s arena rock pedigree should. Notably, Van Weezer is produced by Suzy Shinn, known for her work with fellow Frozen II soundtrack alums Panic! At The Disco. The circle of life! Wait, wrong Disney movie.

Anyway, today’s new Weezer song is called “Hero.” A mustachioed Cuomo previewed it for fans on Zoom the other day; it is officially not a Mariah Carey

cover, despite Weezer’s known affinity for cover tunes. The official version of “Hero” arrives with a video paying tribute to frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19, who are, of course, heroes, hence the video concept. You get it.
