Before you received the signature shoe, the Nike Air Bo Turf, in the year 1990, you launched for the Nike Air Trainer 3, that became known as your shoe. What are the memories you have surrounding the Air Trainer 3?

The way I’ll explain it like this. In 1969 my time in the first grade , growing up in rural Alabama in the winter, it was in thirty-six degrees outside. And I had to go to school naked. There were no shoes. I’m not saying this to gain an apology or as a sob story. However, I can recall my brother standing just a few blocks away from our house. I’m at the front door. My other sister stood just a one block from his brother and my other sister was waiting at the bus stop. My sister who was at the bus stop could see that the bus had climbed the hill a couple of block away she’d shout towards my younger sister. She would then yell at my brother, and then my brother would shout at me. And then I’d go out the door with my feet in the air. And by the time my brother was able to reach my sister’s house I’d be able to catch him earlier. The moment we got close to our bus stop, I was 15 to 20 yards ahead of my sister and brother. From attending school in barefoot during the winter of ‘69 to growing up and getting a sneaker inspired by me … My life was blessed.

After 30 or so years, people are still bragging about that shoe and collect the shoes. A couple of weeks ago, a good friend to me, Anthony Anderson, the comedian, he texts me: Hey, Bo! I’m doing a performance about all my sneakers. I’m not able to find those Air Shoes. I’m looking for a pair of your shoes!’ It just so happened I had the pair on my desk. I thought to myself, ‘Hey! I have a pair here. I can just send those to your address. It’s these moments these that I can sit in my chair and think, ‘Wow!.’
