Michigan men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard will be suspended for the rest of the regular season after throwing a punch at a Wisconsin assistant coach on Sunday, Yahoo Sports reported Monday evening.

Howard will also be fined $40,000 for the incident, while several others coaches and players from both teams will face suspensions or fines.

The incident took place after the Michigan Wolverines lost, 77-63, to the Wisconsin Badgers. As the teams and coaches shook hands after the game, Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was seen on video meeting Howard on the sideline, Newsweek previously reported.

Howard appeared to dodge a handshake while pulling away his mask to say something, after which Gard stepped in front of Howard and the two seemed to begin arguing.

Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft and a Michigan player appeared to try to intervene in the argument, and then a larger crowd of other players and coaches began gathering around them. Howard was then seen punching Krabbenhoft with his right hand, Newsweek reported.

Howard has received both messages of support and condemnation since the incident, but the consequences of him punching Krabbenhoft weren’t known until Monday evening.

Gard has been fined $10,000, but is not facing any suspensions. Wisconsin player Jahcobi Neath will be suspended for one game while Michigan players Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate will also face a one-game suspension, according to a statement from the Big Ten Conference.

“Big Ten Conference coaches and student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship conduct,” commissioner Kevin Warren said. “Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off of the court.”

Warde Manuel, the athletic director for Michigan, released a statement Sunday evening condemning Howard’s actions and promising a review aimed at determining what disciplinary actions were warranted, foreshadowing the university’s ultimate decision to suspend him.

“I am aware of and watched the end of our men’s basketball game. There is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors,” the statement read.

Manuel added that he apologized the Chris McIntosh, Wisconsin’s athletic director, and Michigan’s president had reached out to Wisconsin’s chancellor to apologize as well.

After Howard threw the punch on Sunday, the coaches were quickly pulled apart, but a mini brawl subsequently broke out on the sideline, Newsweek reported.

In an interview with CBS after the incident, Gard said that Howard was likely upset that he had called a timeout with 15-seconds remaining in order to reset the 10-second clock.

Meanwhile, Howard said that he thought someone had touched him, which he said was “uncalled for” and was what escalated the situation.

“I didn’t like the timeout they called, and I’m being totally honest with you,” Howard added. “I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead. I thought that wasn’t fair to our guys. And so that’s what happened.”

Howard has since issued a statement apologizing for “both my actions and words.”

“I am offering my sincerest apology to my players and their families, my staff, my family and the Michigan fans around the world. I would like to personally apologize to Wisconsin’s Assistant Coach Joel Krabbenhoft and his family, too,” the statement read.

“Lastly, I speak a lot about being a Michigan man and representing the University of Michigan with class and pride, I did not do that, nor did I set the right example in the right way for my student-athletes. I will learn from my mistake and this mistake will never happen again,” he added.
