The world’s richest man Elon Musk took to Twitter to ease fears from worried SpaceX fans about future missions to Mars. Musk has talked about his desire to colonise the red planet

New Twitter chief Elon Musk has given fans an update on his dream to launch a SpaceX mission to Mars.

The world’s richest man has found himself in the headlines in recent weeks for the disastrous start to his reign as owner of the social media app.

Musk has long talked about his desire to go to the red planet, and has even talked about colonising Mars in the coming decades.

It follows weeks of chaos at Twitter since securing the social media giant.

Replying to a Twitter user who posted a meme suggesting Musk was placing Twitter over Tesla and the Mars mission in terms of importance, he wrote: “Mars plans are still moving forward.”

Musk has overseen a tumultuous few weeks since taking over at Twitter HQ.

He reinstated former president Donald Trump’s account while also offering a general amnesty to suspended accounts, both times after offering up the choice to a public vote on the social media app.

The ex-US president may not return to the platform, as he said: “I don’t see any reason for it.”

Musk completed his huge $44billion (£36bn) on October 28 after months of legal wrangling.

The world’s richest man, who is worth an estimated $181bn (£149bn), has since laid off half the company’s 7,500 workforce.

Hundreds more staff are believed to have left, following an email saying that long hours and “hardcore” work would be required of those who remained.

It has led some SpaceX fans to fear about the future of Musk’s long-mooted Mars plans, but the billionaire moved to ease those worries.

Musk, 51, has previously said that his plan to establish a colony on Mars would allow humans to become not just multi-planetary but interstellar.

It is hoped that a completely self-sufficient Mars colony could be set up by around 2050, though the SpaceX boss is yet to speak publicly about what comes after.

He said: “It’s been now almost half a century since humans were last on the Moon. That’s too long, we need to get back there and have a permanent base on the Moon - again, like a big permanently occupied base on the Moon.

“And then build a city on Mars to become a spacefaring civilisation, a multi-planet species.”

Musk also said: “Eventually something will happen to Earth, hopefully not soon, either natural or man-made that would cause the end of civilisation.
