Investing - At a secret location, Ukraine finance minister invites western countries to attack Russia economy

Being in a secret location, the Minister of Finance or Finance Minister of Ukraine , Serhiy Marchenko called on western countries to increase sanctions against Russia.

Marchenko made the call while speaking to the BBC from an undisclosed location in Ukraine on Friday.

“I think these ( existing economic sanctions ) are not enough,” he said of the economic sanctions that have been imposed on Russia.

This statement reinforces his comments this week, in which Marchenko had called on G7 leaders for more stringent sanctions. “For us it not just words, time is very important,” he continued.

He also described the importance of the position of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant for Ukraine. “An important and very crucial object in our country (Ukraine)”, after several of its buildings were hit by the target of fire by Russian troops.

Russia attacked and has taken control of Europe largest nuclear plant, but international monitors say no radioactive material was released during the attack and the plant is said to be in safe condition.

During the interview, Marchenko also asked investors to dispose of Russian assets.

He said index operators should remove Russian assets from their benchmarks as well.

They (Russia) are said to play an important role in the market because ‘passive’ funds amount to trillions of dollars in the assets they generate, while active managers use them as a basis when building portfolios.

MSCI, an American financial firm, said this week it would drop Russia from its emerging markets index that it would also expand to make the country stock market “uninvestable” because of Western sanctions.
