I dig what you're saying Zinn, but I refuse to “dumb down” my rhymes. Winning is way less important to me than writing lines that are elevated. I just expected there to be more people who would get that kind of thing. I mean, I use abstract metaphors and I know it's not an explicit message for a lot of people.
I guess I just thought since this is text battling it would be a little more poetic. I was wrong, and my future verses for this site will be just as raw and (no offense here) loose as I can make it.
Also, Ecko, since you seem determined to talk smack, why not step up after the tourney so I can staple your mouth shut…LOL my dreams ARE dead:(

I understood all of it. States says I have a tendency to do the same thing, and confuse people with shit that's too complex. So I dumbed it down. Ya know why, because my AUDIENCE told me to. If you don't listen to the people who are gonna be listening to (or in this case reading) YOU, then that's just arrogance, homie. Remember this, buying your OWN album, aint gonna make you no money.
Sway, the UK's number one rapper, has some INSANE lyrics - but he was told that he was being too complex too early in his career, so he chilled out a little. Now he's made it big, he's releasing those mad crazy lyrics and believe me he's doing it over here. Dumbin it down aint you going against what you believe in, it's you being more compatible with your audience and giving them something that they can relate to and understand.
Zinn's 100% right on this one.

That's EXACTLY the problem with hip-hop, Jamino. Too many people act and write according to the popular demand…which is basically called “mainstream”. True artists create something new, not just to sell albums.
I have a few tracks recorded and have been on the radio multiple times, but making albums and money with hip-hop is the LAST reason I do it.
That's why I'm here on this site, to practice, not to make money and fame.
And I'm not meaning to be arrogant, I say this shit to my crew ALL the time, and thye think it's weird too. LOL can't believe all this came from me being drunk and claiming foul play. Sorry, y'all. I'm more than satisfied with the praise I've been given.

I'm not saying you should give up on what you believe in. You're misunderstanding me. I'm saying you should hold it back until your audience is ready for it. Otherwise the Style you're fighting for is NEVER going to be heard, and that aim ranks ABOVE making fame and fortune.
Personally, if i'm passionate about something, then i'm willing to make a few sacrifices in the meantime for that passion to be lived. Then, when the time is right, BOOM. You're right, real artists create something new, and i'm willing to pursue different pathways so I can release my innovations.
Believe me, diversity is one of my main aspirations. Listen to my music, it speaks for itself.

i agree about dumbing it down.
i noticed in some of Immortal Techniques early songs were way lyrical like he was readin a dictionary or something but he has dumbed it down and now in my opinion its better.
just think about audience.
peace.
